Legacy Product — App Support Ended 2024

JuiceBox 40 Review

The JuiceBox 40 was once one of the most popular home EV chargers. In 2024, Enel X Way closed its U.S. and Canada EV charging business, ending app support. We do not recommend buying one new today.

JuiceBox 40 EV Charger — Legacy Product After Enel X Way U.S. Shutdown in 2024
Legacy Only

Important: JuiceBox smart features are no longer functional in the U.S. and Canada

Enel X Way announced the closure of its U.S./Canada EV charging business in 2024. The JuiceBox hardware physically charges vehicles, but scheduling, app monitoring, energy history, and all cloud-based smart features are unavailable. NHTSA also opened a preliminary safety evaluation following reports of fires and electrical malfunctions. We do not recommend purchasing a JuiceBox 40 new today.

Our Verdict

The JuiceBox 40 was a genuinely good charger in its prime — 40A, Wi-Fi connected, energy monitoring, and a polished app that made it a top recommendation for years. None of that matters for a new purchase today.

Enel X Way's exit from the North American EV charging market in 2024 took the smart features with it. The unit physically passes electricity to a vehicle's onboard charger via J1772 — that still works — but it is now effectively a dumb charger that happens to have unresponsive app buttons. There is no active warranty service, no software updates, and no customer support infrastructure in the U.S. or Canada.

Additionally, NHTSA opened a preliminary evaluation into certain JuiceBox residential chargers following complaints about fires and electrical malfunctions. No completed recall has been issued, but a safety investigation attached to a product with no manufacturer support is a serious concern.

Our recommendation: if you already own one and it's working without issues, continue using it as a basic charger. Have an electrician inspect the installation for any signs of overheating. When you're ready to upgrade, the Emporia EV Charger or ChargePoint Home Flex are the logical replacements.
